Today is Sister Rosetta Tharpe Day in Pennsylvania. Not sure of anything significant about 11th January but any day is a good one to celebrate the good sister’s music. BBC Four are showing an hour documentary The Godmother of Rock ‘n’ Roll over the weekend and then presumably on the BBC iPlayer. Hopefully they’ll get to the bottom of whether she really does sing “wankers” on ‘This Train’ (surely not). In the meantime, this’ll whet your appetite.

  1. Watched the doc on BBC4 Friday night. Felt like another gap in my knowledge had been filled.

The clips from the 1964 British TV appearance were bordering on the surreal - someone's church lady auntie turning up for tea then playing a very n=mean guitar. Great fun though - would love to see the whole thing.

  2. She is just the business. You can get stacks of her recordings for next to nothing. (£15 for a four CD set etc). Stuff from around 1946-47 is dynamite.
