THE STRYPES at the CROSSFIRE ALLNIGHTER, LONDON

It’s not often my jaw hits the roll of my button-down but it did watching The Strypes at Crossfire. On the face of it four Irish lads, average age fifteen, playing R&B covers is about as appealing as an after school detention but whilst other kids have been doing whatever other kids do, these lads have been studying The Yardbirds at the Crawdaddy Club. The result was nothing short of incredible. They weren’t incredible for their age; they were incredible, full stop.

I’ve never seen R&B played with such contagious energy and excitement. It’s one thing doing rave-ups of “You Can’t Judge A Book By Looking At The Cover”, “I’m A Man”, “Got Love If You Want It” and “I Wish You Would” but they even breathed fresh life into drab old standards like “Stormy Monday Blues” and “See See Rider”. They’ve done away with the dull old man blues part and replaced it with young man fiery reds. There was stacks of both smoke and lighting coming off that stage. Their playing was phenomenal. One can only assume they sold their souls at the tuck shop.

The lead singer was slightly overshadowed by his band mates but he’ll grow in confidence and add an edge soon enough. The cockiness of the others, especially the young Keith Richards-looking guitarist, was fully justified. They know how good they are.

The Strypes aren’t the run of the mill young group fumbling around; they’re obviously being groomed for the big time. I hope the two or three songs I didn’t recognise at the beginning of their set were originals [they weren't] as their next test is to channel their unquestionable talent into something of their own.  Once they do, they’ll be the ones with imitators.

CROSSFIRE ALLNIGHTER PLAYLIST

The latest Crossfire allnighter down by Great Portland Street was a few weeks back but was so good it’s worth a belated mention. As soon as the R&B room opened at 11.30pm people hit the floor and stayed there, making it a pleasure and a breeze to DJ. I even managed to play close to what I’d planned; that seldom happens so was testament to the dancers who were up for a few less familiar 45s mixed in with classic gems. This is what they got from me.

CROSSFIRE ALLNIGHTER, SATURDAY 22nd OCTOBER 2011

The latest Crossfire allnighter is on Saturday and although you wouldn't know it from the selective flyer above it features a live performance by 60's UK psych sensations July. If you don't own their eponymous 1968 LP, you really need to remedy that fact. I'll be spinning some tunes in the R&B room later.

Doors open at 2030, July are on at 2200, and it'll cost you £15 with admission to the allnighter after the band. If you miss the band and come after eleven the price drops to £12.

CROSSFIRE/LE BEAT BESPOKE ALLNIGHTER SETLIST

Well, that was some evening last night/this morning to finish this year’s four night Beat Bespoke event in olde London Town. All three rooms were packed and a buzzing atmosphere throughout. I was suffering with a stinking cold which was soon forgotten although I looked rough before I even went out, so heaven knows what I looked like after ten hours of caning the Stella. And to make matters even more interesting I managed to lose a contact lens so that created a bizarre disorienting effect. If you thought I was winking at you lecherously, I probably wasn't.

Here’s what I played for the first set at 01.10am. Doesn’t look much like what I’d intended, but that’s usually the way:

Leo Price Band – Hey Now Baby (Up Down)
Grover Pruitt – Little Girl (Salem)
Jessie Mae – Don’t Freeze On Me (Dra)
Artie Golden – Look Out (Sunshine)
Dorie Williams – Tell Me Everything You Know (635)
The Gardenias – What’s The Matter With Me (Fairline)
Bobby Peterson Quintet – Mama Get Your Hammer (V-Tone)
JB Lenior – She Don’t Know (Checker)
Banny Price – You Love Me Pretty Baby (Jewel)
Ernie Washington – Lonesome Shack (Chattahoochee)
Aretha Franklin – Tighten Up Your Tie, Button Up Your jacket (Columbia)
Rufus Lumley – I’m Standing (Holton)
Mike Pedecin – Burnt Toast and Black Coffee (Federal)
Buddy Guy – I Dig Your Wig (Chess)
Dick Holler – Mooba Grooba (Comet)
Sugar Boy Williams – Little Girl (Herald)
Mitty Collier – My Babe (Chess)
Kim Weston – Helpless (Gordy)

At 05.10am came the closing set of the weekend. After three allnighters of great music for the connoisseur, thought it would be nice to end on an unashamedly populist one. Seemed to do the trick:

Gospel Pearls – Two Little Fishes (Liberty)
Gladys Tyler – A Little Bitty Girl (Decca)
Anna Belle Caesar – Little Annie (Glad-Hamp)
John Lee Hooker – Think Twice before You Go (Bluesway)
Harmonica Fats – Tore Up (Darcey)
Isley Brothers – This Old Heart Of Mine (Tamla Motown)
The Elgins – Heaven Must Have Sent You (Tamla Motown)
Barbara Randolph – I Got A Feeling (Soul)
Marjorie Black – One More Hurt (Sue)
The Marvelettes – I’ll Keep Holding On (Tamla)
Ann Sexton – You’ve Been Gone Too Long (Seventy Seven)
Sunday – Ain’t Got No Problems (Chess)
Mel Torme – Comin’ Home Baby (London)
Barabara Dane – I’m On My Way (3 Trey)
Marv Johnson – Come On and Stop (United Artists)
Lou Lawton – Knick Knack Patty Wack (Wand) for Guy
Darrow Fletcher – The Pain Gets A Little Deeper (Groovy)
The Temptations – Get Ready (Tamla Motown)
Edwin Starr – Stop Her On Sight (S.O.S.) (Ric-Tic)

Cheers to everyone who made it so much fun.

CROSSFIRE ALLNIGHTER - SUNDAY 4th APRIL 2010

The bank holiday is inching nearer and once more you’ll find me wobbling behind the decks in the darkness of the The Venue on Great Portland Street, London Town.

The old Northern Soul vest botherers will be hip to the slippin’ and a-slidin’ in the main room; the more discerning R&B crowd will be up peepin’ and a hidin’ in room 2; and the psychedelic ragamuffins will be doing the dinky doo in room 3.

With very few other DJ gigs coming up if you want to feel the full force of a box of Monkey Magic, then wear your wig-hat on your head, pull on your hi-heel sneakers and come on down. Click on the flyer for the small print.
